Cycle Training UK instructor Clare Morris discusses the challenges and benefits of Positive Spin a programme enabling people with dementia to cycle

CTUK cycling instructor and psychotherapist Clare Morris talks about the challenges, benefits and future of the ground breaking project 'Positive Spin' in this month's edition of the Journal of Dementia Care:

'Positive Spin is a cycling project for people with dementia and their carers. Scepticism was a frequent reaction when I first floated the idea and this may have been justified, given the symptoms of impulsivity, poor planning and judgement that can accompany dementia. But cycling relies on procedural memory, an aspect of memory that is often unaffected in people with cognitive impairment despite some of the very disabling movement disorders that often coexist with it.' Positive Spin starts again in Hackney and Lambeth this Spring. Cycle Training UK is looking to deliver more Positive Spin hubs in other London Boroughs so if you are a local authority get in touch!

Notes for Editors

Cycle Training UK, a worker's co-operative, exists to promote cycling as a form of transport. We love cycling. Since 1998 we have trained over 80,000 people to cycle skilfully and confidently on Greater London roads. All our instructors are permanent members of staff and undergo continuous rigorous training and professional development.

As well as delivering urban cycle training we offer maintenance sessions, instructor courses and driver training. We are acknowledged as leaders in the provision of instructor training - many other cycle training organisations and Bikeability schemes use us to train their staff and health check their schemes.

Businesses across London choose to work with us to enable their employees to commute to work. We offer bespoke packages to organisations including urban training, maintenance masterclasses and lunchtime cycle safely seminars.

We are a City & Guilds approved centre offering Cycle Mechanics as well as 3 tiers of maintenance training courses.

Cycle Training UK was the first provider to offer on-road cycle awareness training to professional drivers and continues to pioneer, for example recently developing an awareness programme for driving instructors.
